Singapore is a combination of two Malay words singa and pura. Singa means lion and pura the city. Therefore, the country is called the Lion City or Singapore. According to a popular folklore a prince while traveling to this land encountered a lion which happened to be the first living creature he saw on this land. Hence, he decided to name the place as Singapore. Singapore became a British colony in 1819 and later joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963. In the year 1965 it became independent to become one of the best countries of the world.

 

The climate of Singapore is of equatorial nature. It is warm and humid almost the entire year. The rains are a common feature here. You can see intermittent showers throughout the year and hence while traveling to Singapore it would be wise to carry an umbrella or raincoat. There are no distinctive seasons in Singapore. There is uniform pressure and temperature. The hottest months are May and June while November and December happen to be the wettest months of the island.

 

The people traveling to Singapore must have a passport with them which has validity of more than six months from the date of their departure. If you are planning to stay in Singapore for only a period of 15 days or less then a Visa is not required. The tourist can obtain a 14-day Social Visit Pass on their arrival. These passes can be collected from the Changi International Airport. While in the country traveling is not a problem. It has a very efficient transport system which ferries passengers to and fro the various destinations. The domestic travel of Singapore comprise of the Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit. There are also air-conditioned buses and taxies which ply the city on a regular basis.

 

Tourism is the major industry in the economy of Singapore. The Orchard Road district of Singapore is the center of tourism. It is known for its multi-story shopping centers, malls, and hotels. The Night Safari and the Singapore Zoo also is one of the main tourists’ attractions. They can be even visited during the night time. There are no visible barriers between the travelers, wild animals, and their natural habitats. The travelers get an opportunity to explore African, Asian, and American habitats. The Jurong Bird Park is another place to visit. It has wide varieties of birds from all over the world including the flamingos. The most popular tourist destination of Singapore is the Sentosa Island. It has more than 5 million visitors and around 20 to 30 landmarks to be seen. Fort Siloso, Tiger Sky Tower, and Marina Bay Sands are some of the attractions of the place. The Resorts World Sentosa also has a casino.
